Safe: Design Takes on Risk, at MoMA in Manhattan, is an exhibition of products and prototypes designed to protect the body and the mind from dangerous or stressful situations, to respond to emergency situations, to ensure clarity and to provide a sense of comfort and safety.
Safety is an instinctive need that has guided human choices throughout history. Our craving for protection, reassurance and comfort shapes our daily activities and social systems. Risk, on the other hand, is mankind's propelling fuel in the search for discovery, innovation and inspiration.
Designers are trained to balance risk with protection and to mediate between them. Ranging from pacemakers to shelters for the homeless, baby strollers and the display of nutritional information, Safe explores the fine line that divides functions from emotion.
