Dutch conductor Edo de Waart, as the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra's new artistic director and chief conductor, brings the majesty of Beethoven to the Sha Tin Town Hall. Following the E flat Septet Op 20, for violin, viola, cello, clarinet, horn, bassoon and double bass, Waart conducts the groundbreaking Third Symphony, also in E flat, best known by its nickname, Eroica.
The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra turned professional in 1974. Since 1989 - when David Atherton became chief conductor - it has been resident in the concert hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, whilst also giving concerts in other auditoria like the City Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, Sha Tin Town Hall and Tuen Mun Town Hall, along with Pops concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum.
In 2000, when David Atherton became conductor laureate, Samuel Wong became chief conductor. With the orchestra's 30th anniversary in 2004 a new chapter opened, with Wong followed as both artistic director and chief conductor by Dutch conductor Edo de Waart.
